Opening Ceremony was founded in 2002 by two friends from UC Berkeley, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, as a place to share their passions for travel, art, and fashion. Inspired by a trip to Hong Kong, the two decided to leave their jobs in corporate fashion to realize their unique dream. What began as a single store on a quiet street in downtown New York is now a global community with outposts in New York and Los Angeles, a department store in Tokyo, a wholesale showroom, an in-house clothing line, a blog, and an e-commerce site.
Taking its name and mission statement from the modern Olympic Games, founded by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, Opening Ceremony adopts a multinational approach to retail. In addition to stocking both iconic and emerging homegrown designers, every year OC showcases the spirit and merchandise of a visiting country, transforming each store into a marketplace for exotic souvenirs and international talent.
Today, OC continues to grow according to its founding principles of exploration and friendship, working with a family of contributors to forge a creative environment that reaches far beyond the fashion world. Over the years, Opening Ceremony has collaborated with brands including Rodarte, Topshop, Pendleton, and Maison Martin Margiela, and has become known for its projects with creatives like Spike Jonze, Terence Koh, and Chloë Sevigny. In 2011, Carol and Humberto embarked on a new journey as the creative directors of Kenzo, taking the storied French fashion house into a colorful new chapter.
OPENING CEREMONY launched in Tokyo in 2009, setting forth a concept "Mini mega mall". It launched as a eight-storied select shop which had never existed in Japan at that time. It went t on to a new stage after 3 years and was relocated to Omotesando as an evolved stand-alone store with an new shop/brand essence in April, 2013. From its new local point on Cat’s Alley, it has been further boosted the fashion culture of Tokyo and of Japan.

OPENING CEREMONY OMOTESANDO showcases its world by presenting products in unexpected and unconventional ways while offering comfortable and customer-friendly environment. On each floor, different materials and themes separate one area from another to create an independent store environment, offering unique shopping experience. Based on OPENING CEREMONY's aesthetics, combinations of new colors and shapes create a medley in every area. Key elements are floor-to-ceiling stairs, wavelike large racks, floating-like grass dishes, and lights shed from LED monitors. In addition, design detail that multiplies different materials such as wood and concrete, or aluminium and brass. While being mixed with vivid colors and graphic, and finely shaped objects, they praise great collections of various designers carried at OPENING CEREMONY and express a new updated presentation. Original store fixtures created to realize OPENING CEREMONY's signature creative visual were designed as shapes of human, exotic animals and large-scale food work as a visual language and communicate brand's world.
As before, customers can find a wide variety of women's and men's accessories selected by OPENING CEREMONY's artistic and uniques sense including OPENING CEREMONY and other newly emergin brands collected each season from the world, and popular brands such as Alexander Wang, PROENZA SCHOULER, RODARTE, TOGA, etc.
